DearColleague,

TheHaidaiareaofeasternChinaisanimportantregionforinvestigatingtheoriginsofcivilizationinChina,andforarchaeologyinEasternAsiaasawhole.Thechronologicalframeworkformostareashasalreadybeenestablishedthroughthehardworkofseveralgenerationsofarchaeologists.Duringthepastdecade,alongwithcollectingimportantnewmaterial,themaintopichaschangedfromchronologytothestudyofancientsocieties,andmanydifferentopinionshaveappeared.Therefore,deeperresearchfocusingonthedevelopmentofeconomicorganization,socialorganization,socialstructure,andstateformation,fromtheperspectiveoftheoryandpractice,havebecomemorenecessary.

Therefore,theArchaeologyResearchCenterofShandongUniversity,AncientCivilizationResearchCenterofCASS,andtheShandongProvincialArchaeologyInstitutewillholdanInternationalConferenceonTheDevelopmentofComplexSocietiesinEasternChinafromSeptember20to24,2003inJinan.
